General Guidelines and Requirement for Wildlife Conservation Board Grants

The Wildlife Conservation Board offers grants under most of its programs.  These include grants for restoration and enhancement of wildlife habitat, development of public access facilities for wildlife oriented uses and protection of habitat through fee acquisitions and conservation easements.

Below are some general guidelines and requirements.  For specific information and grant opportunities under each program please visit the corresponding web page for the program.

 General Guidelines and Requirements:

  • Eligibility - The WCB provides grants to public agencies and non-profit groups and organizations.
  • Department of Fish and Game (DFG) Review - The WCB relies on the DFG to review, recommend funding and assist with assigning priorities on proposed projects (some exceptions do apply).
  • Applying - For restoration, enhancement and public access development projects a completed application must be submitted to the WCB.  The applications and instructions for filling out these forms are provided under the corresponding web page for each program.  For Acquisition related projects a Land Acquisition Evaluation or Conceptual Area Protection Plan, including a biological assessment, is required.  These documents are reviewed and scored by the Department of Fish and Game, through their Lands Committee process.  For more information on the acquisition evaluation and application process please see the WCB Acquisition Program web page.  For more information on the DFG's Lands Committee process please contact the DFG regional office; a listing of these offices is provided on the WCB Acquisition Program web page.
  • Continuous Submittals - The WCB accepts applications for funding on a continuous basis; depending on available funding sources.
  • Studies, Operation, Planning, Design, other Pre Construction and Pre-Acquisition Costs - Grants for these types of items are generally not funded by the WCB, due primarily to the restrictions placed on the funding administered by WCB.
